Two Films About Loneliness plays two films at once. The screen is split down the middle, and each half is a stop-motion film in a different style and a different language. The two stories run side by side, and the audience has to choose where to look and how the halves relate.
The co-directors, Will Bishop-Stephens and Chris Eales, are both graduates of the Royal College of Art. The voice cast includes the comedian Tim Key and the German actor Detlef Bierstedt. The film runs a little under six minutes.
It played widely on the festival circuit, including Sundance, Anim’est, Encounters, Edinburgh and the Montreal Stop Motion Film Festival. It won the Ecumenical Jury award at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen. In London it was in the official selection of the 2015 Greenhorn festival.
For filmmakers
A formal idea this strong is a programmer’s dream: it can be described in one sentence and remembered after a day of viewing. It also shows how well a film can do on the circuit with a clear hook. See how to choose short film festivals.
