Charity is sixteen and comes from a travelling family. Her brother Shaun is released from prison early, and she has to find a way to cope with what his return does to her and to the family.

Charity is a 12-minute drama directed by Jimmy Dean, with Ellie Gocher as writer and producer. Both were graduates of the University of Westminster’s Film and Television Production course. They made the film as their debut short and shot it on 16mm. It stars Charlotte Beaumont as Charity, Ed Birch as Shaun and Amanda Drew as their mother.

At Greenhorn

Charity screened in the official selection on the opening night of the 2015 festival at the ArtHouse Crouch End. It won the festival’s Best of the Fest award, presented by Mike Leigh. It was also a runner-up in Shooting People’s Film of the Month.

For filmmakers

Shooting a debut on 16mm is a deliberate, expensive choice, and here it suits a story about a closed world. If you are weighing film against digital, read our guide to shooting a short on a low budget.
